Computer Viruses In Orbit
August 28, 2008
In the news today the International Space Station has caught a computer virus. It has been confirmed by NASA that a laptop carried onto the ISS was infected by a virus called Gammima. A.G.
The worm waits on infected machines and steals login names for online games. NASA are investigating the occurrence, though this was not the first time that a computer virus made it to Space.
The laptop was issued to an astronaut to run nutritional programs periodically and email Earth. The laptops reportedly do not have any antivirus software and the virus has not posed any threat to the astronauts. NASA is working with the ISS to work out how the virus got there in the first place?!
This does however warrant the question of how long it will be until we start having serious problems with our security. Especially with the online culture that we are a part of! At some point the hackers will become stronger that those in charge of computer and data security… what will happen then?
