Food Prices Soar
September 5, 2008
In the news today an index compiled by the BBC showed that supermarket prices in the UK have risen by 8.3 percent since January.
The biggest price increase seen was in the meat and fish sector which went up by 22.9 percent and fruit and vegetables also increased by a massive 14.7 percent. Verdict Research, a retail analyst found that some food items had risen in price by 50 percent, such as pre-packed croissants.
We have all been feeling the pinch recently and these figures have been published, showing that food products have risen in cost far, far above the official level of inflation.
The BRC, British Retail Consortium said that inflation of food prices was 10 percent, that’s more than twice the official stated figure by the Consumer Price Index of 4.4 percent. The BRC also said that fresh food items had increased was even higher by 11.9 percent.
The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept interest rates at 5 percent. Fears over the forthcoming recession in the UK economy has urged the MPC to cut interest rates, though this has not yet happened and is unlikely to in the immediate future.
Are We Winning The War On Drugs?
September 4, 2008
Ex-Director of the UK Anti Drug Co-ordination Unit in the Cabinet Office, Julian Critchley wrote:
“What harms society is the illegality of drugs and all the costs associated with that. There is no doubt at all that the benefits to society of the fall in crime as a result of legalisation would be dramatic.”
In the news today the old drug legalisation argument has been raised. Unlike times past, where those in favour of legalisation were mainly docile hippies and liberal fundamentalists, today an overwhelming number of professionals have taken the same view. Read the rest of this entry »

UK Debt Culture
September 2, 2008
What a state of affairs the UK is currently in… Literally Britain is in debt!!! Not just Britain, but myself and most of my friends too!!!
I can understand that many businesses will be struggling, no one I know can afford to utilise them! Not only that, but there are so many people unemployed at the moment… I would be driven insane. Sat there with watching day time TV, with no money, stressing about how I can afford to live, with the bad credit loans advertisements running almost on repeat, over and over again!!
It was a mere generation ago that borrowing money brought with it a negative social stigma. Now the UK owes more than a trillion pounds of mortgage debt. Is that actually a real number? Apparently a trillion is 12 noughts. Anyway the trillion doesn’t even take into account the masses of credit card, loan and hire purchase debt, to name but a few.
Now we’re all looking to economise, including the government. How Read the rest of this entry »
Sex Rehab For Duchovny
September 1, 2008
David Duchovny has this week entered a rehab clinic for a sex addiction. We are told that the X-Files star said that he entered the facility “voluntarily”.
Duchovny, aged 48 has been married since 1997 and have two children together.
David released a statement:
“I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family.”
Funnily enough he played a sex-obsessed character in the hit TV series Californication. Is this one of those situations where the actor takes a role a little bit too seriously?! Read the rest of this entry »
